Mutual Goals in Angola May 25, 2008 The Roots of Peace Penny Campaign has raised over “one million pennies” to help restore soccer fields on former minefields in Huambo, Angola. Our proud partner in the implementation process is the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) who will work directly with local residents to build a community soccer field so that children may share mutual goals and practice fair play on former war-torn regions. The city of Huambo is located in the heart of Angola, and suffered greatly during the war several years ago where landmines remain today—preventing a child from kicking a soccer ball out of bounds for risk of losing a limb. The city of Huambo, the second largest population in Angola, is also the site where the late Princess Diana of Wales took her final footsteps raising global visibility regarding the landmine issue during the last year of her life. Yet, sadly many of these landmines remain in the ground today nearly ten years later—preventing the cultivation of agricultural fields rich with healthy fruits to feed young soccer players, yet the land is held hostage by the perils of landmines. The goal of the Roots of Peace Penny Campaign is to restore childhood dreams for youth who have suffered the ravages of war. Currently, the children of America have raised over 20 million “pennies” to remove landmines and establish soccer fields in Afghanistan and Croatia. See www.rootsofpeace.org and click on PENNIES, so that YOU may register your school, church, or community service group to contribute to this worthy cause empowering children worldwide to share mutual goals on fields safely cleared of landmines!
