FedEx partners with Roots of Peace

“Minefields to Soccer Fields” in Afghanistan

Transports Soccer Gear from SFO to Kabul to Restore Childhood Dreams

San Rafael, California—January 28, 2004—Federal Express Corp. (“FedEx”), the world’s largest express transportation company, has partnered with Roots of Peace to delivery a shipment of soccer equipment to children in Afghanistan. Roots of Peace “pennies for peace” campaign—MAKING CHANGE WORK-- has raised over 6 million pennies to remove landmines and rebuild soccer fields in war-torn regions of Afghanistan, so that children will have a sense of “fair play”.

The Ross Valley Youth Soccer League has supported the Roots of Peace effort by gathering soccer uniforms, cleats, balls, and equipment in prime condition from the previous season. Over 100 families participated in the effort to provide necessary sports gear for Afghan children to play soccer on former minefields.

FedEx is delivering soccer equipment to children in Afghanistan “Our goal is to empower future generations with a sense of pride and good sportsmanship. Lessons will be learned by both Afghan and American children, as they strive to heal the wounds of war by providing the tools for success.

The game of soccer represents the seeds we have in common rather than those which separate us,” states Susan Cagann, Board of Directors, RVYSL.
