Students Rally to Clear Landmines, The Register-Pajaronian

By LAURA NORTON and AMANDA SCHOENBERG

Students from high schools across Santa Cruz County gathered Sunday afternoon at Monte Vista Christian School to kick off a fund-raiser aimed at helping clear Afghani schools and playgrounds of landmines. Students at nearly every county high school will collect change between now and Dec. 3 for the groups Roots of Peace and Making Change Work, student-coordinated nonprofits dedicated to de-mining efforts.

"The amount you raise might seem small, but $100 can really change a life," said Making Change Work co-founder Kyleigh Kuhn, who spoke at the event.

Monte Vista Rally Honors First Responders, Santa Cruz Sentinel

By JEFF TOBIN
Sentinel Staff Writer

Parents and students will honor the nation’s first responders during a rally Sunday at Monte Vista Christian School. Originally designed to focus on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the event now includes an emphasis on those who are helping in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

But the event was almost scrapped because of the Gulf Coast disaster. "A lot of people thought we should cancel because of Katrina," said Sharon Ince, parent coordinator for the event. "But we’re honoring Sept. 11 and people who aid us in times of crisis. It made sense to keep going with the rally because these are really the same people."

The rally starts at 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium with songs by the Monte Vista Christian School choir and prayers by the student chaplain. Speakers include a firefighter from the Pajaro Valley Fire Protection District and Peggy Pope, who is in the U.S. Department of State’s Weapons Removal Division.

One of the original motives for the event was to shine a light on the use of land mines across the globe. Marin County-based Roots of Peace was brought onboard to help.

Speakers will include nonprofit Roots of Peace founder Heidi Kuhn and her teen daughter Kyleigh, who started Making Change Work — Collecting Pennies for Peace, and Peggy Pope, foreign affairs officer in the Department of State’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement and a representative from the Pajaro Valley Fire Protection District.

A rally will follow with food, entertainment from local bands and a de-mining demonstration. Students from Aptos, Pacific Collegiate, Watsonville, Monte Vista Christian, Harbor, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and Soquel high schools will join the event.

By CARLA BOVA
IJ Reporter

Soroptimist International of Marin County will honor three San Rafael women for their humanitarian work and community achievements.

Daisy Fitzgibbon, who drives seniors and the disabled while attending college, and 17-year-old student Kyleigh Kuhn, who founded Pennies For Peace, will be honored today during a ceremony at the Club at McInnis Park. Marin Sanitary Service president Patty Garbarino will be honored for her dedication to children and community during the group's fund-raising event May 6 at the Mill Valley Community Center.

"These three women are exemplary of soroptimists' goals - to help women throughout the world to become better educated, more independent and greater contributors to our society," chapter president Marla Martin said.
