Iraq

Iraq minefield

On August 19, 2003 a truck bomb ripped through the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, killing 17 and injuring over 100 innocent people. In honor of our lost UN colleagues, Roots of Peace made a special donation to the UN Mine Action service for demining in Iraq.

Roots Of Peace in Iraq

Iraq is riddled with landmines. The border with Iran was heavily mined during the Iran-Iraq war. Mining also took place in the northern regions inhabited by the Kurds. Partnering with the UN Mine Action Service and Mines Advisory Group, we funded the clearance of over 10,000 square meters of land and the removal of 20 landmines and unexploded ordnance from wheat fields near Mosul— with the vision that one day neighbor will “break bread” with neighbor again.
