The Roots of Peace Penny Campaign is an annual humanitarian program inspiring youth worldwide to organize their school student body to collect pennies and spare change to rebuild villages imprisoned by landmines by constructing schools, soccer fields, and playgrounds enabling children of war-torn countries to take safe steps forward for peace. View video to learn more about our program and hear from our youth activists.

The Rotary of Club of San Francisco joins our effort and launches the Rotary Roots of Peace Penny Campaign. Learn more and see press about the campaign and how Rotary Club members can involved their businesses and communities.

We are delighted to partner with the Jane Goodall Institute’s California Roots & Shoots youth network. Founded by Dr. Jane Goodall, the Roots & Shoots program inspires youth of all ages to make a difference by becoming involved in their communities. Background

The Penny Campaign was envisaged in 2003 during an informal luncheon in San Francisco where the three founders were discussing the issue of landmines. All three women realized they one thing in common—they had all walked through a minefield in the Balkans. At the end of the luncheon, the women mutually agreed to collaborate on a student program to help heal the wounds of war where landmines are daily seeds of terror for innocent children. Together, these women launched the Roots of Peace Penny Campaign.

How it Works

It's simple! Just identify a “coordinator.” This can be a student leader or adult who:

  • registers your school or organization to access program materials and information
  • gets the word out to the school or community
  • places coin collection canisters in school or community locations
  • engages youth in projects to learn about the landmine issue and mine affected countries or other “lessons” learned through participation
  • periodically collects the coins and stores in a safe place until the end of the campaign
  • coordinates getting the donated coins to Roots of Peace

You’re in control! You decide the best way to get the most out of the program.
