Roots of Peace Pennies Campaign Report

We are very pleased to report on how the collected pennies have been put to use in mine-affected countries.

Fall 2003 Campaign

Our participating schools, organizations and businesses raised over 7 million pennies ($70,000) in our pilot campaign launched in September 2003. These funds demined a minefield next to Bajgah village school located in the mountains about 60 miles north of Kabul. Please view the Bajgah Village School Project Report for details.

Fall 2004 Campaign

Roots of Peace has funded demining projects in the Bagram district since 2002. The funds collected during this campaign period continues this work and has been put to use building soccer fields at the Bagram boy's and girl's schools. Please view the Bagram District Project Report for details.

Fall 2005 Campaign

We are delighted to report that Roots of Peace funded two projects in the fall of 2006 with the pennies collected during the 2005 campaign period. The first project continued to build on our work in the Shomali area, north of Kabul, Afghanistan. Roots of Peace has transformed a tent school in Mir Bocha Kot by building new classrooms and restrooms. Please view the Kyleigh Kuhn Roots of Peace School Report for details.

Our second project will demine a soccer field in Angola in the Huambo province, the area where the most fiercest fighting took place during the recently ended civil war. We anticipate combining with funds raised in the Fall 2006 campaign to accumulate sufficient funds to demine a suitable site in Angola. We are working with our demining partners in Angola to identify the site.

Fall 2006 Campaign

A project was completed in December 2007 at the Kyleigh Kuhn Roots of Peace School in Mir Bocha Kot to build a soccer field for recreation and an enclosure wall surrounding the school to prevent students from wandering into the nearby minefields. We are grateful for the leadership of Mrs. Shamim Jawad, wife of the Afghan Ambassador to the U.S. and the International Chairperson of the ROP Penny Campaign, who helped secure the funding of this project from the US-Afghan Women’s Council of the US Department of State. Please view the Soccer Field Project Report for details. Stay tuned for an update on our Angola project.

Fall 2007 Campaign

Our Penny Campaign is underway and we look forward to completing new projects in war-torn countries with the pennies collected. Every penny counts!
