United Nations World Environment Day

United Nations World Environment Day -- June 5, 2022

In 2005, Roots of Peace introduced the concept that landmines are an environmental concern and signed a proclamation to transform Mines to Vines with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). Today, this idea has been turned into reality on many continents around the world.

In tribute to UN World Environment Day, Roots of Peace proudly launches our HARVEST OF HOPE 2022 to feature the impact of our program on farmers and families living in Afghanistan, Guatemala and Vietnam.  As we cultivate peace through agriculture, we will share stories from remote provinces on the frontline of peace.  For as we heal the wounds of war, we plant the Roots of Peace on Earth.

In Spring 2022, Roots of Peace has proudly planted over 1.1 million fruit trees in Afghanistan.  With generous funding from USAID/AMP ($30 million) and UNDP/INL/CBARD ($45 million), we have overcome many obstacles to assure a ‘Harvest of Hope’ for deserving Afghan farmers—providing dignity and hope for future generations to thrive.

While the situation is not always ‘peaches and cream’ in Afghanistan, our first story depicting the Peach Harvest in Nangahar will inspire you—leading with the shovel, not the gun.

Only one Earth

In our galaxy are billions of planets,
But there is #OnlyOneEarth.
Let’s take care of it.
